Speech-Literacy Specialist

General Summary

The Speech – Literacy Specialist is responsible for the providing the speech team with support related to literacy skills. This position operates in a professional and clinical environment.

The Speech – Literacy Specialist’s responsibilities of this role also include providing support to the team related to literacy and incorporating components of literacy into BYS’s overall speech-language therapy programming as well as providing overall professional development to the Speech-Language Pathologists (SLP) in relation to literacy.

The Speech – Literacy Specialist’s responsibilities are to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions, have the ability to read, analyze, and responds to inquiries or complaints from clients and effectively presents information to top management.

This is full-time position, and hours of work and days may vary based on the needs of clients/business.

Essential Functions, Duties & Responsibilities

Core duties and responsibilities include the following.

  • Maintain a billed utilization of a minimum of 164 sessions/month. One-off reductions for special projects will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis by the Director – Speech Therapy and SVP – Therapy.

  • Provide support to the speech team related to literacy and incorporating components of literacy into BYS’s overall speech-language therapy programming.

  • Provide overall professional development to the Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) in relation to literacy.

  • Connect individually with new hires to gauge experience incorporating literacy into therapy sessions and treatment plans as well as providing resources related to literacy in addition to offering “office hours” once a month to discuss literacy with current SLPs.

  • Documentation responsibilities include: pre-authorizations, initial evaluations, re-evaluations, insurance reports, progress reports, and SOAP notes. Templates for all documentation are available on the electronic database system used across the company.

  • Provide individual therapy to clients focusing on a variety of areas including speech, language, feeding (in IL market only), AAC, and social skills.

  • Participate in collaboration with BCBAs, OTs, outside providers, and families to provide a consistent continuum of care for clients.

  • Maintain current licensure and certification with state organization as well as American Speech Hearing Association (ASHA) while abiding by the ethical standards.

  • Represent BY YOUR SIDE to local, state, and national organizations in a positive manner when attending professional seminars.

  • Provide input and assist in the ongoing growth and development of BY YOUR SIDE.

  • Travel, as necessary, to other centers to participate in required trainings such as CPR, Safety Care, and professional development.

  • Uphold and maintain BYS core principles, policies and procedures and ensure HIPAA compliance.

  • Other duties and special projects as assigned.

Certifications Required

The following certifications and licensure are required for this position: Permanent licensure provided by the state specific licensing board.

  • Illinois: Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation

  • Certificate of Clinical Competence as provided by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA).

  • CPR Certification (not required)

  • Excellent time management skills with the ability to multi-task, prioritize, meet deadlines, and produce high quality deliverables with a strong attention to details.
  • Proficiency in use of basic technology systemssuch as Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft Teams. Initial onboarding training includes basic overviews of these programs

Environmental conditions/physical requirements: (with or without accomodations)

This role functions in both professional and clinical environments

  • Reliable transportation is required for travel to and from work and between therapy environments (which may include other centers).
  • May regularly lift, pull, push, and /or move 10-25 pounds, and may occasionally lift pull, push, and /or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Physical ability to move quickly, kneel, bend, squat, crouch, twist, walk, sit, stand and reach for prolonged periods.
  • Must be able to respond quickly, which may include transitioning from a seated position to standing in case of client elopement or emergency.
  • Must be able to assess and navigate factors that may impact safety and security.
  • This position’s hours of work and days vary based on the needs of clients/business. Evening, weekend work and/or overtime may be required, as needed.
  • This position requires prolonged periods of computer use, keyboard/finger and hand dexterity and extended screen time throughout the workday.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk, comprehend or hear and perform in an environment with elevated noise levels.
